Yesterday I visited our new listing at 19606 Spring Creek. This is a nice 3/2/2 home set on 9 acres of typical East Texas creek bottom forest. It's winter in Texas, but there were squirrels and birds about and as I checked the outside faucets (we've had some freezing weather this week) I heard one of the most interesting in the neighborhood, a pileated woodpecker. I only caught a glimpse of this big bird as he swooped from one tree to another. But I got to hear his distinctive call several times, and that is always a treat. It actually has a tropical jungle kind of call and I wonder if some sound men use it when adding background for jungle scenes. East Texas fall foliage is just beginning to appear. The sweetgums will be turning soon and my cameras are ready. This is the time of year when those beautiful purple berries appear all over this area. The bush is a Callicarpa, common name American Beautyberry. My dad called it a "French Mulberry" and I think Grandma had another name for it, as well. I was surprised to learn it's sold through nurseries since it seems to be all over the woods around here.
